2020 Pelee Island Lighthouse Riesling VQA

Pale straw in color with a mild green apple nose. On the mid palate it spot on matches the nose with a nice firm green apple note. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely crisp, dry, acidity, with some citrus notes and apple lingering on the tongue. We served it fairly warm and it has some nice length to it when warmer than fridge temps. We paired it with battered homemade fried cod and it went well. I would give it an 87-88 which for the price is not a bad deal. FYI this is a general list product. From the LCBO web site, check stock:

Schreckbichl Colterenzio Pinot Grigio 2020

Pale straw in color with a mild nose. On the mid palate without food the wine displays some crisp tart, lime and even a hint of smokiness. On the medium length finish the citrus notes and vibrant acidity live on in the mouth. However, we paired it with Alfredo sauce on a butternut squash ravioli and not a chance it was holding it’s own, so be careful what you serve it with. I would give it an 87-88, which , honestly, for this price, I expect more, I won’t be rushing out to grab more. From the LCBO web site, check stock:

… the 2020 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio offers fresh layers of lemon, green apple, kiwi and a hint of summer grass or dried straw. This is an easy-drinking wine with a cheerful and immediate personality that would pair with an epic platter of fried shrimp. However, you also get that touch of extra complexity and tonic freshness that comes easily to the high-altitude wines of the Italian Dolomites. Drink date: 2021-2023. Score – 90. El Pedrosal Crianza 2016

Dark in color with a mild red berry oaky nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some mild red fruits, almost some vermouth notes … On the medium length finish the wine displays firm edgy tannins, super velvety dryness that stick to the tongue noticeable oak and smokey notes. I’d have to say this wine is pretty close to past due. It’s not horrible, but if I had more I would most definitely take them back … I would give it it an 87 or so. Catena Appellation San Carlos Cabernet Franc 2019

Inky dark in color with a vibrant black berry nose that comes right out to greet you on pouring … On the mid palate the wine has some vibrant black cherries, and some mocha. On the medium length finish there some smokey, peppery and dark chocolate notes, along with some firm tannins and acidity … nice and dry. I was expecting a softer Cab Franc but this is one is quite big. We paired it with a meat sauce spaghetti and it held it’s own and is a pretty varietal cab franc. Masi Rosa dei Masi Rosé 2021

I’ve been enjoying exploring Rose’s, so when this one was on the list I found it intriguing … A Rose made with an Apassimento grape? With great anticipation I cracked this one … on first sip great anticipation turned almost immediately to great disappointment. This tasted like a mouth of cranberry juice, and didn’t really even task like a wine. It’s been a while since I returned a bottle of wine I hated, ya this is get’s that honor … Yuck. Please don’t pour it down the drain, even the fish wouldn’t enjoy it. Nuff said. From the LCBO web site, in case you wanna try it for yourself …

Château des Charmes St. David’s Bench Vineyard Gamay Noir Droit 2018

Bias up front, I find a lot of Niagara Gamay’s way too fruit forward for my tastes, so when I was given this, I was skeptical … Dark in color with a mild nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some mild dried black plums along with some smokey and even tobacco notes. On the medium length in finish the wine displays some firm peppery notes, tannins, and acidity that stick to the tongue. If you use to wimpier Gamays this will be a surprise to the taste buds. The flavor is quite unique, and even unusual. I would give it an -88 or so … From the LCBO web site, check stock:

Masseria Altemura Falanghina 2020

We don’t get a lot of Falanghina’s here, so when we do I pounce on them. Another of the unique indigenous grapes of Italy! You could spend a career learning these wines, oh the agony of the challenge 🙂 Pale straw in color with a nice apple nose, similar to chard on the nose … On the mid palate the wine displays some nice tart green apple notes, some nice lime citrus and some minerally notes … On the medium length finish the nice tartness, acidity and citrus notes linger nicely, even more pronounced without food, nice and dry! Be careful what you pair it with, this is a softer gentler wine. We paired it with bacon quiche and the wine was almost overpowered. This is not a bad price for a Falanghina, I may go back and grab some more, I bet it would easily keep a couple years. I would give this an -88. From the LCBO website, check stock:

Southbrook Triomphe Organic Cabernet Franc Rosé 2021

This is a very different kind of rose, right from the color which is a lot more deep rich red notes than most … Mild on the nose with a vibrant mid palate that packs a lot of flavor, think pomegranate, or tart cherries and the like, not the easiest flavor to nail down. Dopff au Moulin Cuvée Europe Riesling 2019

Biases up front, I’ve had a lot of sweet Reislings and am SO NOT A FAN but when I saw this one at 2 g/l residual sugar it enticed me to try it … Pale straw in color with a mild nose of minerality and a hint of honeysuckle. On the mid palate the wine is nice and crisp with the minerality shining through, along with some nice green apple notes. On the medium length finish there a hint of honeysuckle, but really more lime/green apple tart notes. The acidity clings to the tongue nicely providing some nice depth and complexity. There’s some noticeable creaminess to the wine, not to the level of a malolactic chard but still noticeable. I would give this an 88 or so, quite a lively wine. Product Details

The 2019 Meerlust Red is a blend of 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Initially a little reticent on opening, this wine quickly sheds its broody, sulky, spicy veil to reveal a wonderfully complex aromatic array of black plum, black berry compote, orange peel, Christmas pudding over hints of pressed violets, sweet cedar spice and graphite nuances. The palate is plush and fleshy from the word go, showing an open knit, expressive opulence of red currant, bramble berry, black currant, sweet oak spice, black tea and a sleek texture that simply embraces the palate and makes you go back again and again for another sip. Refreshingly vibrant and impressively generous, I suspect this wine will age surprisingly well for over 10+ years even though it’s simply a cracking drinker right now on release. Honestly I think I am outgrowing this type of sauv blanc. I would give it an 87-88. From the LCBO web site, check stock:

Penley Gryphon Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Cabernet Franc 2020

Dark in color with a nice dark berry nose … On the mid palate the wine displays some nice elegant black cherries and black plums, along with some mocha. On the medium length finish the wine displays lovely dusty tannins and smooth acidity … nice and dry! Not a hint of errant minty or herbal notes! This is quite a nice wine, we paired it with filet mignon and it went REALLY well not as complex as some Bordeaux blends but good anyway. I would give it an 88 or so, for the money it’s worth grabbing a few, we went through two in night 😉 Damned evaporation, or as the country music song goes … There’s a whole in my bottle … From the LCBO web site, check stock:

Casas del Bosque Pinot Noir Rosé 2021

I have to admit, I have not had a lot of Roses from Chile, so I approached this with some curiosity. On the positive side it is 100% Pinot noir, so it’s intriguing … Pale salmon in color with a mild nose. On the mid palate the wine displays nice smooth soft red fruits, strawberries and the like. On the medium length finish the wine displays nice smooth crisp, dry acidity and citrus notes that linger nicely. This wine is a beautiful patio summer sipper, or it pairs well with lots of foods too. I would give it an 88 or so. Quite nice, and a good showing. To date I have been underwhelmed by entry level Chilean pinot noirs but this Rose is redeeming! From the LCBO web site, check stock:

Casas del Bosque Pinot Noir Rosé 2021 - View Image 1

Product Details

Made with direct pressed clusters, squeezed gently for light color and then fermented as a white in stainless steel tanks, this is truly cherry juice – refreshing, light, and ideal to drink by the liter in the summer. Not to be missed, a wine that speaks of what a good moment it is for rosé in Chile. Score – 91. (Patricio Tapia, guiadescorchados.cl, 2022)
