Thirty Bench Winemaker’s Rosé 2021

$22.95VINTAGES#:27024

Pale salmon in color with a mild nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some mild effervescent notes along with crisp dry acidity and a hint of zesty tartness. Lots of crisp minerality and strawberries coming through. There’ some unusual flavors that I couldn’t place, perhaps from the pinot meunier, the back of the bottle says it’s a blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Gamay Noir. I would give it an 87-88, a nice crisp dry rose, but a little odd, and honestly, at this price you can do way better with a Provence rose. I only bought one, but would likely return it otherwise. We paired it with a cheddar and blue cheese burger and it went nicely.

2017 Batasiolo Barolo DOCG

Garnet in color with a mild nose of red cherries. On the mid palate the wine displays deep rich cherries along with dark chocolate notes. On the longer side in length the wine’s tannins are BIG, FIRM and ripe, sticking to the togue. Super dry. This wine is a little young and should easily have another 2-5 years of storage and it will soften out. I would give it an 88 or so, quite a nice entry level Barolo for the price. Kew Vineyards Old Vine Chardonnay 2019

Pale golden in color with a nice apple and pear nose. On the mid palate the wine displays lovely apple and pear fruits along with some nice vanilla notes. On the medium length finish the wine is nice and dry with some creaminess coming through. This is somewhere in between in terms of oak influence, this is less oaked than one of my current goto favs, the Henry of Pelham Short Hills chard … I would give it an 88 or so, we paired it with grilled calamari and scallops and it was delicious, yumm, I will be going back to get more, not cheap, but yummy and another great Niagara oaked chard! Pasqua 11 Minutes Rosé 2021

Pale salmon in color with an odd pink grapefruit nose. The wine took me off guard, it was NOT what I was expecting. On the mid palate the wine displays strong, dominant pink grapefruit notes along with some strong acidity. This is an intriguing wine, but you have to open your mind to “different”. The wine honestly reminded me more of a New Zealand Sauv blanc than a Rose … I would give it an 87-88, from the LCBO web site, check stock:

Château Bouscassé 2016

Dark in color with a smoky, earthy nose along with some black berries. On the mid palate the wine displays deep rich black berries along with some nice peppery notes, vibrant acidity and firm tannins. On the medium length finish the wine’s acidity lives on the mouth along with some hot alcoholic notes, nice and dry. This like most tannats is an edgy wine, if your looking for smooth, elegant wines, ya this so isn’t that. It’s nice a dry with lots of character to it, but be sure and serve it with something hearty that can hold up to it. I think the wine might be a little young, some patience of decanting would really help ease the alcohol and acidity. For now I would give it an -88. From the LCBO web site, check stock:

Glen Carlou Pinot Noir Rosé 2021

Salmon in color with a mild slightly minerally nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some soft citrus and grapefruit notes, but where this wine lives is in the finish. On the medium length finish the wine displays some vibrant acidity that sticks to the palate where citrus notes linger nicely, nice and dry. There’s even some interesting smokey notes. 2021 Aveleda Fonte Rose

Salmon in color with a smoky flinty nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice crisp minerality, strawberries and the like. The minerality sticks nicely to the tongue leaving some almost lime hints. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice crisp dryness and acidity. A perfect summer sipper, and given the price, a good deal. Check LCBO stock:

From the winery’s web site:

Vinho Verde Doc, Portugal
Varieties: Azal Tinto, Touriga Nacional and Espadeiro
Vintage: 2020 / 11% Vol

Aveleda Fonte Rosé is a typical rosé profile from the Vinho Verde Wine Region. The night harvest allows the grapes to keep their freshness and, consequently, preserve their aromatic properties. This rosé is made using the direct pressing method: when arriving at the vinification center, the grapes are directly pressed at low pressures to avoid skin contact. The alcoholic fermentation happens in stainless steel vats under strictly controlled temperatures to preserve the most typical aromas of the varieties. Fermentation happens in contact with lees in order to keep the freshness of the wine.

Tasting Notes

Pale rose, in the typical Provence style, this wine is elegant and fruity, with a crisp and delicate bouquet marked by notes of red berries and flowers. The velvet-smooth-texture and penetrating minerality make this wine extremely gastronomic, perfect to pair with dishes with delicate aromas.

Piazzano Ventoso Sangiovese 2019

Dark in color with a mild cherry nose with some oaky notes coming through. On the mid palate this wine is a BIG one with lots of dark cherries, tomato notes, firm vibrant acidity and noticeable oak. On the medium length finish the tang from the tomato notes lives on as does some palate coating tannins, dryness and acidity. If you like your wines smooth and elegant, ya this is NOT that, so be careful what you serve this with. I went with a smoked trout and honestly it kinda blew the fish away but was heavenly with the chocolate browning. I would give this an 88 … It’s possible this is a bit young and some aging, or decanting might help. From the LCBO web site, check stock:
