CONO SUR VIOGNIER 2009

Another wine from the Chilean wine event. The wine is quite pale in color. On the nose it is more Sauv Blanc than Viognier. On the mid pallet is is quite dry with some peach and grapfruit tastes. It’s medium in length. I would give it an 88 or so. Not a bad wine for the price at all!

FEATHERSTONE ESTATE BOTTLED MERLOT 2007

Regular readers to this blog know I have a preconception of what a Merlot ought to taste like. And I am more often than not disappointed. Now add to that, I have never had a good Niagara Merlot and you have the making for a strong opinion. Now me and strong opinions are an oxymoron (NOT). So with all this in mind I bring you this review. Let me start out but saying HOLY CRAP. Ok, deep breath.

I had to go to three wine stores to find this one. Armed with two very favorable reviews of this wine I figured I had to give it a go. The wine is quite dark in color. On the nose are some mild black fruits. On the mid pallet are some lovely and luscious Merlot flavors. Eureka … There are some nice sweet fruit forward flavors typical of a Merlot. On the finish the wine has some tannins and out of the bottle a touch of pepper. It is medium to full bodied. It is quite dry on the finish but does not have pucker power. This wine is lovely and would earn the distinction of being THE best Niagara Merlot’s I’ve ever had and damn good Merlot to boot. Did I say HOLY CRAP already? Talk about bursting preconceptions. I love when this happens. I would give this a solid 90. I have no idea how well this will keep but I am quite impressed.

Wine, Red Wine, 12.5% Alcohol/Vol Sugar Content : D This is a VQA wine
Made in: Ontario, Canada By: Featherstone Estate Winery
Release Date: Oct 10, 2009

Tasting Note
This very well-made merlot shows good depth of flavour and fine fruit-acid balance. The concentrated fruit is ripe, well defined and complex, and the tannins are soft and easily manageable. It’s drinking well now and is good for short-term cellaring. Enjoy it with roasted red meats. Score – 4 Stars (out of 5). (Rod Phillips, www.rodphillipsonwine.com, July 30, 2009)

What winecurrent.com had to say:
Perfumed with exotic spice red licorice and field berry aromas it bathes the palate with well-sculpted luscious flavours. Expect succulent cherry black currant and black plum compote flavours persisting throughout the balanced lengthy and fruit-driven finish. Medium bodied and creamy smooth this deserves your attention. Its divine sipped on its own and food friendly”roast pork stuffed with dried cranberries leg of lamb with wine-reduction sauce or pour with your Thanksgiving bird and all the fixings. NAKED GRAPE SAUVIGNON BLANC 2007

When you pick a name for a wine that is “catchy” it can cause some people to grab it, and others to leave it. Catchy to one, is irritating to another. I find this one of those. I know the general idea but was insulted by the name. Like it’s trying to appeal to my male side, since all North American men are obsessed with nudity 🙂 Ok enough of that … Back to the wine … So I have not tried any of the “Naked” wines. I was at Jack Astors having there Three cheese peppercorn rigatoni. I have found in the past a buttery chard and a creamy sauce don’t get along well, so a Sauv Blanc was in order. Add to that, I had not tried this one and it was my immediate choice. Niagara make some nice Sauv Blancs so there is a chance for this one …

For those of you that are regular readers you know I’ve been on a bit of a roll with decent Sauv Blancs and this one adds to that group! Oops gave away the punch line didn’t I 🙂

In the glass the wine is pale as one would expect. The wine is varietal Sauv Blanc on the nose albeit a bit mild. Usual grassy, lemony smells. On the mid pallet is a slightly tart Sauv Blanc with some grassyness but not overwhelming. On the finish it is on the lighter side of medium. There is a bit of texture to the wine as well. This is not a watery wine at all. There is little sugar to the wine and it’s actually a little “zesty”. Somewhat smooth and somewhat refined. For the price this is quite a bargain. I will have to try some more yum. I would give it an 88 or so.

Basics of aging wine

Will all wines improve with age? A very common question. In general the answer to the question is no. Most wines especially those from the “new world” are designed in a “drink now” style. They don’t keep more than 1-2 years. Some wineries would do well to put best before dates 🙂

Others are designed to improve with age! How do you tell? Do your research. Some wineries are clever and put it on the back of the bottle. Some put it on their website. You can also find a raters opinion on how long the wine will age in some tasting notes. Not all tasters do this and they are not always accurate.

Depending on the grape some wines will simply mellow over time, some will become more integrated and complex. It really depends. Take Shiraz for example. Shiraz’s will continue to smooth out as they age, loosing that sharp edge and distinct pepperyness, ending up more like a Syrah. A cab will become more complex as it ages.

When a wine does age it get’s better up to a point where it peaks and then it starts to go downhill and eventually will be expensive vinegar 🙂 The trick is to not wait that long (ya think?).

Did you know, one of THE most ageable grape variety in the world is a white, not a red? Yes it is the Riesling grape!

In terms of storage you need a place that is cool (not too cool or it won’t age), dry, vibration free and dark. I have wine fridges and you can buy these at places like Home Depot and Bay or at more specialized places for bigger ones. You don’t need a wine fridge unless the temperature in your place varies significantly. Store the bottles laying down.

Be sure and take keep records of what you have put in the cellar. Keeping track of tasting notes, best before/after, price paid etc. These will be helpful in the long run. Consider using a database. There are free ones for example Bottle count or just keep paper notes.

So … do your research, age only those wines that will improve and don’t wait too long. How do you know when you’ve waited long enough and it’s time to drink it? When you just can’t bare to wait another moment!

RINGBOLT CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2007

This wine presented some challenges for me. On the nose there are lots of traditional cab smells. Lovely deep rich cassis, cherries and other dark fruits and there is something there. Not awful just not perfect. On the mid pallet the flavors match the bouquet. There are lots of deep rich cab flavors, cassis, cherries, some sweetness, all in all quite nice. On the finish there are some lovely tannins with a touch of dryness. Then there is something there just just is out of place. The descriptions mention things like eucalyptus and herbal and earthy notes. I can’t quite nail it down but that might be it. I let it decant for about 1/2 hour and it seemed to fade slightly. Given the price this is a deep rich wine, quite a bargain. I am pretty impressed with it. 89 or so. If some aging let that out of place flavor and smell disappear this could easily move into an 90-91 range it’s that good. Don’t let the out of place smell and taste distract you. I recommend you give it a try and decide for yourself. We paired it with a pork sausage with rice and carrots (and chocolate brownies of course) and it complemented the meal quite well!

Update two days after first opening it I tried it and the wine is definitely getting better and better. I would say this bodes well for aging!

From the LCBO web site:
RINGBOLT CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2007 Margaret River Western Australia This round-textured well-balanced Cab is a winner every year. Delicious as always it features ripe blackcurrant black cherry chocolate licorice eucalyptus and cedar. Dry medium full-bodied with gentle tannins this wine would be a terrific match for rack of lamb or thick and juicy New York steaks. 606624 $19.95
Featured 3/28/2009

What winecurrent.com had to say:
14.5% alcohol (Previously reviewed in winecurrent) Heres a Cabernet Sauvignon that drinks like it should cost a fair bit more. It features nice complexity on the nose with cassis and mocha mingling alongside soft herbal and earthy characters as well hints of vanilla and black pepper. Its well structured with firm ultra ripe tannins creating great balance. This is a rich full-bodied wine that is expressive from the first sniff through to the expansive finish. If you can get your hands on some Kangaroo filet its a quality regional match if not a grilled pepper steak would do quite nicely. Very impressive. (Mark Tandan) (606624) $19.95 Rating 4.5/5

Santa Carolina Reserva Sauv Blanc 2009

This is another of the wines I first tasted at the Chilean Wine event. The wine is quite pale in color as would be expected from a Sauv Blanc. On the nose there is a dominance of grassyness with little else shining through. On the mid pallet there are green fruit flavors and grassyness to match the bouquet. On the finish there are lots of tart flavors on a medium finish. The wine is quite young and it shows in the greenness. There are no sweet flavors to balance the tartness. The description on the back of bottle mentioned pineapple as a flavor. If it’s pineapple it sure isn’t the sweet golden pineapple but rather an unripe green pineapple. For my tastes this is an ok wine and especially for the price but I wouldn’t run out to grab a pile. I would give it an 87 or so.

LUIGI BOSCA RESERVA MALBEC 2005

I’ve had this one in the past and it has been a good deal so I grabbed it again. The last time I had it was after 1 year of bottle aging and it was lovely. On opening the wine is dark purple in color as expected on a malbec. Some nice fruit on the nose. On the mid pallet are varietal malbec flavors. On the finish is a slight bit of tannins. The one I had was no where near as big as the one James Molesworth had in the description below but perhaps that’s the additional 8 months in the bottle. I would give this an 88-89. Not as good as the last vintage and nowhere near the 91 that James gave it. Nice wine none the less.

From the LCBO web site:
LUIGI BOSCA RESERVA MALBEC 2005 Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza This wine earned an Editors’ Choice nod with a score of 91 points in the February 2008 issue of Wine Enthusiast. TASTING NOTE: A big, broad-shouldered wine, with muscular layers of black fig, coffee, bittersweet cocoa and dark licorice piled on top of hefty cedar-tinged tannins. A bit of a brute in style, but cellaring should soften its edges enough. Drink now through 2010. Smart Buy. Score – 91. MONTGRAS SAUVIGNON BLANC RESERVA 2008

My Daddy always taught me, get the most for the least, and barter for everything. Well strangely enough bartering does not work in the LCBO but good deals can be had. I first tasted this wine and wrote it up after the Chilean wine event and decided it needed a longer look. This is another of the general list Chileans so is VERY available.

The wine is quite pale in color as one would expect from a Sauv Blanc. On the nose the wine is mild and pleasing with the usual citrus bouquet and hardly any grassyness. On the mid pallet are some usual citrus flavors to go with the bouquet. This one is not as sweet as some and is quite dry. On the finish are some mildly tart flavors with some of the grassyness coming through. The finish is on the lighter side of medium. All in all this is a gentler, more subtle Sauv Blanc. Quite food friendly. I paired it with spicy tandoori chicken and it held up well. I would give this one an 87-88. For the price this is quite good. I’m impressed with how consistent these inexpensive wines are!

RAVAZZI CHIANTI RISERVA 2006

The wine is dark purple in color. On the nose are lots of dried dark fruit fruits but on the mild side. On the mid pallet are dried dark fruits to match the bouquet, I’d say some raisin flavors along with some stewed prunes. Again on the milder side. Subtle and smooth. On the finish the wine has some dry flavors and bit of pucker power. Some tannins and oak are present but nothing overpowering. I decanted it to remove some vinegary/alcohol flavors that dissipated easily. I was not as patient as Vic who decanted it for 2 hours. I did it for about 1/2 hour. The wine is a good Chianti albeit a bit on the milder side for me. I would give it an 88 or so. If you like your wines smooth and refined this might be a good one for you. We paired it with a steak and risotto and to be honest the food overpowered the wine. It was easier to appreciate it without the food. It wasn’t really a good complement.

From the LCBO web site:

Norman Hardie estates (Winery visit in Prince Edward County)

This write up is from our trip this summer to the Prince Edward County area. See the entire article at my Prince Edward County trip blog

None of these are carried in the LCBO (for now).

Norman Hardie

2007 Pinot Gris (County) $25
Slightly sweet, Riesling like. The wine is on the lighter side of a medium finish. Very pale in color with a mild bouquet. Fairly typical of a County Pinot Gris

2007 Riesling $21 (Niagara)
Frankly I am a little prejudice towards wines like this. If I want a Niagara Riesling I will go get it in Niagara. I’m not sure I see the point. And given that CWG (and Mrs CWG) and I (and my GF) all enjoy the Cave Spring Estate Riesling … Always good to put biases up front. Very pale in color, light in flavor. It has a noticeable sulfur smell with a taste to match. Not a nice wine. I can only assume they had to use a sulfate to preserve the wine to ship it from Niagara to the county … I have never encountered this in any Niagara wine.

2007 Pinot Noir $35 (County)
Classic Pinot Noir color. Slight dill smell to it (as I have encountered in Niagara when they are not well made). Varietal Pinot Noir flavors albeit a very mild wine with a mild finish.

J. BOUCHON SAUVIGNON BLANC 2007

I had this one as a house wine at Spice. The wine is quite pale in color. Nice grassy lemon on the bouquet with a hint of sweetness. On the mid pallet there are citrus and grassy flavors to match the bouquet. On the finish the wine has a touch of tartness and is on the lighter side of medium. For a $9.20 bottle of wine it was quite enjoyable. Very food friendly. We had it with a Cantonese chow mein and it went well. This is yet another bargain priced Chilean Sauv Blanc. I am truely on a roll! I would give it an 88-89 ish.

Coyote’s Run Unoaked Chard 2007

Was out for dinner at Saucy’s in Streetsville and decided to try this one. There are still some wineries in Niagara (and more opening regularly) that I have not yet been to, this is one of them. Coyote’s run are also making the Bob Izumi label wines. Personally I enjoy the added complexity that a chard can have when it is oaked, malolactic fermented and treated to sur lie. My GF on the other hand does not. So we decided to try this one. The benefit in it not being oaked is you get to appreciate the pure flavor a chard has to offer. This one is quite pale in color, mild on the nose. On the mid pallet are some gentle chard fruits. This is a subtle wine that builds slightly in the mouth especially if you aerate it while in your mouth. The wine is slightly sweet in flavor but not bad at all. On the finish the wine offers up some mild tart flavors to balance out. I would call the finish medium. This is a pretty good wine made in the drink now style. I doubt it would keep a really long time like some chards. All in all I would give it an 88 or so. It’s not in the LCBO so you will have to take a trip out to the winery to get it.

TRAPICHE BROQUEL MALBEC 2007

Cracked this one the other night. The wine is quite dark purple in color. It’s very mild on the nose with not a lot jumping out at me, some black fruits. On the mid pallets this is another mild Malbec. On the finish is a slight bit of tannic bitterness. Nothing horrible but present. This would be a whole lot better in say 1 year. The finish is medium with a bit of dryness to it. For now this one is not knocking my socks off. It’s well made, smooth (mostly) and all in all an average wine. I would say an 87-88. Not a bad wine, just not stunning. Again not breaking into a panic at the thought of not having bought a case. I certainly won’t be waxing lyrical as the reviewer below did.

Update: It’s amazing what a little breathing/aging can do. I tried this two days after I first opened it and it was like a different wine. The unpleasant finish went away and that allowed the lovely fruit flavors to shine through. If you have the patience to either decant it, or age it I would up this to say an 89-90. The difference was profound.

From the LCBO web site:
TRAPICHE BROQUEL MALBEC 2006 Mendoza Oak Aged The Broquel Malbec consistently goes above and beyond the quality of most wines in its class offering amazing value. A solid Malbec it offers elegance and character with layers of plum cherry blackberries cocoa leather and smoke. It’s medium full-bodied with ripe fruit flavours and moderate tannins and should be served with rare T-bone steaks or grilled rack of lamb over the next 3-4 years. 0 17210 $15.95

Stonechurch 2007 Merlot

We had this wine apres a ride in Short Hills provincial park. The wine is quite dark in color, mild on the nose. On the pallet the wine is reasonably fruit forward with red and black fruit flavors. Not what I would call varietal Merlot but reasonably good none the less. The wine has an almost jam like flavor. It’s still a little on the young side. On the finish the wine has a little bit of dryness and tannins typical of the terroir imparted by the Niagara area. They have done a good job on this one, keeping the tannins in check. I would give it an 88 or so. Not bad at all!

CHATEAU DE VALMER VOUVRAY 2008 AC

I’ve had some lovely Loire valley chenin blancs, and some pretty darn bad ones. This one is smack dab in the middle. The wine is quite yellow in color. On the nose are lots of sweet honey suckle smells. On the mid pallet are some quite sweet flavors. On the finish are some tart tastes to take away some of the sweetness. This is not a bad balance, but a little sweet for my tastes. I prefer a little dryer. The wine very much reminded me of a Spatlese German Riesling. I would give it an 88 or so. I won’t be rushing out to buy a whole lot more of this one …

From the LCBO web site:
CHATEAU DE VALMER VOUVRAY 2008 AC (Jean Battelier) TASTING NOTE: A very true-to-type Chenin Blanc with plenty of fruit balanced by zippy acidity. Pear orange rind table grapes and McIntosh apple fill the nose and palate. This is one off-dry Chenin that will reward 3-6+ years in a cellar. If you are anxious to try it tonight match it to spicy dishes such as vindaloo chicken or green curry shrimp. Or give it a go with soft cheeses such as brie and Camembert. RUTHERFORD HILL MERLOT 2002

I like half bottles. They are perfect in a restaurant in that you get about 2 1/2 good size glasses out of them. And at home they are perfect for enjoying with a meal, nothing left over, not that finishing a bottle has even been a difficult task 🙂 The price point on half bottles also means you can try something for a lower entry price. I have been caught more than once though reading through a review thinking I have found the bargain of the century only to discover when I get to the LCBO that it is a half bottle. So you need to watch out for these.

This one got a good write up so I decided to try it. The wine is deep garnet in color. Mild on the nose. On the mid pallet there are some sublte Merlot flavors. And then the finish … it is quite alcoholic and burning on the throat. This builds as you sip. With food this is less noticeable but still there. Maybe this is what the reviewer called “lively acidity”. I would give this an 87-88 or so.

From the LCBO web site:
RUTHERFORD HILL MERLOT 2002 Napa Valley Tasting Note: A very tasty and rich merlot that would match a range of grilled food. Plenty of lift on the nose with concentrated black cherry plum and chocolate. Very pure aromatics without the contrived character of many merlot wines. Good fruit depth and balance on the palate with dark berry chocolate and leather enveloped in creamy oak and lively acidity. Impressive structure and length. Best 2005-2010. Score – 90. Society for American Wine/Australian Wine Society Syrah/Shiraz event

The thing I enjoy about attending structured tastings like this one is that it serves to further refine my knowledge and appreciation of wine. Sometimes it even destroys misconceptions I have.

Shiraz and Syrah are two different names for the same grape. The difference between the two is the style in the way the wine is made as well as the different flavors imparted into the wine by the terroir.

Shiraz tends to be more of a fruit forward style of wine with quite a peppery, tannic finish to them. Sometimes the tannins and pepper can be quite dominant.

Syrah on the other hand, when on it’s own (the French often blend Syrah) ends up being a smooth, refined wine without the edgeyness on the finish.

The difference between the two is most evident when the wine is young. As the wine ages I discovered at this event, the peppery, tannic finish dominant in a Shiraz integrates more fully into the wine and the line between a Shiraz and a Syrah virtually disappears. This is the first time I’ve had a well aged Shiraz and I was impressed with how smooth it can become. I had always believed there was no point in aging Shirazs beyond 5 years. Man was I wrong. These were lovely. The oldest tasted was a 1999 and all of the wines we tasted were still tasting VERY well. Managing a large cellar isn’t easy and it would be a crying shame to have a wine go bad before you get to it! Clearly the cellar masters are doing a great job!

This particular event was a blind tasting.

Onto the tastings. We started the evening with two chardonnays as the reception wine.

Reception wines

YALUMBA WILD FERMENT CHARDONNAY 2008 $17.95
The wine is pale in color with some mild sulphur on the nose. Not to the point of smelling a match (which I have had before), but it was there. The wine is quite mild in flavor, some slight butteryness, some varietal chard flavors with a mild finish. There is a bit of sulphur tastes to the wine as well. All in all this was an Ok wine, but nothing great. I would give it an 87-88 ish.

CHATEAU ST. JEAN CHARDONNAY 2007 $19.95
The wine is a lovely Californian style chard with some butteryness, some creamyness and a finish that builds nicely in the mouth. At first the wine seems light in flavor until it starts to build. After a few sips you are really appreciating the depth and complexity of the wine. This is a very well made chard. Be sure and try a few sips of it on it’s own (without food) to fully appreciate it. I would give it a 90 easily. Yummy. Of the two this was my favorite and the crowd also preferred this one. As an interesting side note, this winery is owned by Fosters, an Australian company.

– beautiful bouqet with some oak and coffee smells. Lots of cassis like smells! My mouth was watering just based on the smell. This was actually the first wine we started with and I was quite enthralled with the bouquet!
– lots of beautiful fruits, a lovely smooth wine with a medium finish. This is a well made wine that has aged extremely well. I would be thrilled to have some of these in my cellar! Of course at the price it ought to be good 🙂
– this was by far my favorite wine of the evening and the groups 3rd favorite

YALUMBA WILD FERMENT CHARDONNAY 2008

This was the second reception wine at Society for American Wine’s Shiraz/Syrah tasting event.

From the LCBO web site:
YALUMBA WILD FERMENT CHARDONNAY 2008 VINTAGES 39271 | 750 mL bottle Price: $ 17.95

Tasting Note
Tart and juicy, with pineapple, pear and citrus flavors that linger nicely. Drink now through 2013. Score – 88. (Harvey Steiman, www.winespectator.com, July 31, 2009)

Here’s what winecurrent.com had to say:
Racy and refreshing look for lifted aromas of green apple and pear along with hints of mixed spice. Crisp flavours of pineapple red currant and racy lemon wash over the palate and throughout the clean and refreshing finish. Light to medium bodied and nicely textured this is the perfect pairing with shrimp ceviche. (Vic Harradine) Australia: Red Wine (039271) $17.95 Rating 3.5/5.

CHATEAU ST. JEAN CHARDONNAY 2007

I had this one last night as the reception wine for the Society for American Wine’s Shiraz/Syrah tasting event. Yummy.

From the LCBO web site:
CHATEAU ST. JEAN CHARDONNAY 2007 VINTAGES 421644 | 750 mL bottle Price: $ 19.95
Wine, White Wine, 13.4% Alcohol/Vol. Sugar Content : D
Made in: California/Californie, United States By: Foster’S Wine Estates Americas
Release Date: Oct 10, 2009

Tasting Note
A surprisingly fresh and zingy wine from Chateau St. Jean in California’s Sonoma County. This Chardonnay pours a pale straw yellow color and offers sweet aromas of fruit and some cedar. On the tongue, you can detect cantaloupe, lemon balm, and vanilla notes. This is a great patio or terrace wine along side an order of frites with mayonnaise. Score – 4 Stars (out of 5). ERRAZURIZ SAUVIGNON BLANC 2009

I first tasted this wine at the Chilean Wine event and felt it needed a more thorough tasting. I grabbed a few of these since they are on sale. The wine is pale in color with a strong lemon/grassy bouquet. On the pallet are lots of tart flavors with the lemon and grass from the bouquet coming through in spades. This wine is quite sharp on it’s own. Not a bad thing, but if your looking for something mild this isn’t it. The flavors are VERY reminiscent of a Kim Crawford that I consider the benchmark in this class but more pronounced. Maybe one might even say less refined. Given this wine is 1/2 the price of Crawford that’s high praise. On the finish the wine is medium in length quite good again for the price. We paired it with a roast chicken and it went extremely well. The chicken took some of the sharpness off and the wine added lots of lovely flavors to the chicken!

The description on the bottle says “Vibrant and refreshing dry style with a zingy citrus fruit character.” Quite a good description!

I would give this an 88-89. It would be interesting to see if it becomes a little more refined with aging. I doubt it would keep a long time but 6 months to a year might make a world of difference. Given the “sale” price, jump out and grab some! By the way this is general list so VERY available!

The Gourmet food and wine show is coming up Nov 19th – 22nd, hope to see you there!

CANDOR LOT 1 MERLOT

It’s been a little while since I was happy with a Merlot. I’ve been on a roll of non-varietal Merlots. Vic Harradine from Winecurrent.com brought this one to my attention. Vic reviews new releases at the LCBO which come in handy, thanks Vic! Yummy …

Onto this wine. The wine is very dark puple/plum in color. On the nose it’s quite a mild bouquet. On the mid pallet, there it is, wait for it, yes! Plum. This is quite a good Merlot. Probably one of the best ones I’ve had in a while. The fruit is prominent and vibrant. Lots of dark fruit flavors. On the finish is nothing that does not belong. No pepperyness, no sharp tannins, the wine is on the lighter side of medium. This is definitely a fruit forward Merlot. My GF loves Merlots and this one was a big hit. The bottle was gone before we knew it. I will be heading back for more. I would say this is easily a 90 (if you like Merlots).

From Winecurrent.com:
Candor Lot 1 Merlot California. 14.5% alcohol Offering good purity of fruit and flavour it opens with heady aromas of mixed spice espresso roast and dark berry fruit. Theres medium weight with loads of texture as it ladles out a gusher of flavour with black currant spiced black Damson plum and dark field berry predominant. The finish is crisp and dry balanced and mouth-watering good. Its a perfect dance partner with medium-well grilled strip loin. (Vic Harradine) (135392) $18.95 Featured 10/10/2009. 4.5/5 stars.

ERTA E CHINA ROSSO DI TOSCANA 2006 IGT

The wine is very dark purple in color, slightly fruity on the mid pallet. Some red berry flavors. On the finish there are some lovely tannins and some terrific dryness. The cab and Sangiovese are lovely together. The rating is accurate I would give this a 90 which for the price is a great deal!. I have no idea how long it will keep.

From the LCBO web site:
ERTA E CHINA ROSSO DI TOSCANA 2006 IGT (Renzo Masi) TASTING NOTE: Dark chocolate berry mineral and strawberry aromas follow through to a full body with soft tannins and a long caressing finish. So good now. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now. Score – 90. (James Suckling www.winespectator.com Oct. 15 2008) 132308 $14.95 Featured 9/12/2009

Waupoos estate (Winery visit in Prince Edward County)

This write up is from our trip this summer to the Prince Edward County area. See the entire article at my Prince Edward County trip blog

A list of all Waupoos wines at the LCBO

Waupoos Winery

Waupoos winery is a fabulous destination. An easy bike ride from Picton it has a lovely setting, beautiful tasting room and nice restaurant in a Gazebo with a Lake view. The foods they are serving are lovely. The staff are enthusiastic and all are fairly knowledgeable about wine.

2006 Geisenheim dry $9.95
This wine is a bargain. It is dry slightly tart easy drinking summer sipper. Medium length very pale in color 88 or so.

2006 truiting $7.95
This wine is an oaked Seyval. The wine is very light wine with not a lot going on. Very little fruit flavor either. For the money the Geisenheim is a better deal. 86

2006 Cab/gamay blend $16.95
This wine had a nasty sulphur smell on the nose with a taste to match. Not nice at all. 85 or so.

2007 Pinot Gris $15.95
Very tart slightly bitter on the finish. Pale in color. Medium length. I had it with a cream based pasta sauce and it cut through it well. The food improved the wine masking the bitterness. 88 or so.

2008 Pearl noir $14.95
On the nose this wine had an earthy smell. The color was lighter almost like a Pinot noir. There was a slight sweetness to the taste. The wine is a blend of a gamay and a baco noir. 87-88.

2008 St Laurent $26.95
This grape is similar to a Pinot noir and the color and flavors were similar. Not a bad Pinot but they aren’t my favorite. 88 or so. Not sure it’s worth the money.

From an Ambiance point of view this is one of my favorites in the area!

Casa Dea Winery (Winery visit in Prince Edward County)

This write up is from our trip this summer to the Prince Edward County area. See the entire article at my Prince Edward County trip blog

On our last trip we visited Carmella Estates and I noted this as being the longest white wine I had ever had. Casa Dea was growing grapes for Carmella and then bought out Carmella estates. They have kept the lovely location and still have the restaurant and tasting room that was there when it was Carmella. They are working feverishly to rebrand themselves.

Casa Dea Estates

2008 Riesling $16.95
Pale in color, light on the nose. The wine has a slightly tart finish that is quite zesty in nature. It has a medium finish. All in all not bad but not varietal when compared to a Niagara or German Riesling, but that is common in the county wines. For a white this wine is quite long. I would give this an 88-89. We bought 4. Very unique wine.

2007 CD Rosso
This is a blend of a Gamay Noir and a Zweigelt. The wine had a sulfur smell off it and an unpleasant finish. I would give it an 85 or an 86.

LUIGI BOSCA RESERVA CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2006

I bought this one because I love their Malbec which I will feature in a future review. On the nose the wine wine has some mild cab like fruit. On the mid pallet there are some very mild blue berry like flavors. I have had a difficulty in how to write this one up. It really does not conjure up specific flavors for me. On the finish there are some tannins noticeable some oak and some smoke. Overall I didn’t dislike the wine but it definitely does not have the deep rich cassis and cherry flavors I enjoy in a cab. The wording below also lacks specifics which tells me I was not the only one having difficulty describing it. Overall I would give this maybe an 88 or so. I wouldn’t be leaping out to buy more of these.

From the LCBO web site:
LUIGI BOSCA RESERVA CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2006 Maipú Mendoza TASTING NOTE: Bright ruby-red. Black- and redcurrant mocha and tobacco along with a whiff of reduction on the inviting nose. Pliant and sweet with fairly thick but smooth flavors of currant chocolate and leather. Finishes with dusty toothcoating tannins. Offers considerable early pleasure but has the freshness to last. Score – 89. (Stephen Tanzer International Wine Cellar Jan./Feb. 2009) 128629 $16.95 Featured 9/26/2009
