2013 Napa Cellars Chardonnay

November 18th 2008 was my first post on CanadianWineGuy, Brett gave me some space to blog! Seven years later, it’s been a wild ride. I’m having a ball, learning lots, tasting lots and sharing with all of you. Looking forward to many more posts in the future. Thanks to Brett for giving me this space and thanks to all of you for stopping by and reading. And now … on with the wine!

Pale in color with a mild nose of apple/pear. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice rich bold chard notes including vanilla and some butterscotch along with some nice pear to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice lively acidity and a hint of pepper. A very nice complex chard. I would give it an 89+.

Red Stone Winery 2012 Limestone Pinot Noir

We recently took a trip down to visit our favorite wineries in Niagara Fielding, and Kacaba. While down there we lunched at Peninsula Ridge. Always a lovely way to spend a day! This time around we decided to throw in a wild card … go to a winery we hadn’t been to, and had never tasted one of their wines. Every winery has a story and this one is no exception. It is owned by the same folks that own Tawse. They have their own winemaker (an Aussie) so they are doing wines of a different style than Tawse.

This wine is garnet in color with a mild rustic varietal nose. Niagara make some lovely pinots … On the mid palate the wine displays some nice varietal rustic fruit notes, and soft red berries. On the medium length finish this wine displays some nice smooth tannins and some dryness. This is a middle of the road pinot. Not as fruit forward as some, not as big as others. It is very food friendly. I would give it an 88 or so. We paired it with rack of Venison and it went very well. Mild enough to complement the Venison without overwhelming yet still bold enough to hold it’s own.

From the Winery’s web site:
First single‐vineyard release from the Limestone estate vineyard. Located on the Twenty Mile Bench, the 16‐year old block is farmed sustainably. Aged 16 months in French oak, this elegant wine displays notes of black cherry, raspberry complemented by earthy and floral notes.

On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice crisp dryness and lively acidity. There is not a hint of sweetness that was in the nose. The wine builds nicely in the mouth. Bonterra, a label established by Fetzer in 1990, prides itself on making wine exclusively from organic grapes. Indeed, according to the California Sustainable Winemaking Alliance, it’s the number one selling brand made from organic grapes. This 2013 Viognier helps explain why. Very floral, with a Muscat-like nuance even, it conveys stone fruit character without being heavy and is buttressed by vigorous acidity. Try it as an aperitif or with highly flavored food. From the winerys website:
Aromas of peaches and cream, citrus blossom and apricot greet you at the glass. Peaches and cream are a sensory signature of this wine. Fruit favors of apricot and peach are accented with spice. The wine is crisp and rich with beautiful elegance and a very long finish. The Mediterranean climate we enjoy on the North Coast, combined with careful selection of the right rootstocks (101-14, 5C, 110R) and particularly the aromatic Viognier Clone 642 that does well in the gravelly, loamy soils in the region brings us exceptional Viognier fruit even in challenging growing seasons. Following an established Bonterra custom, we’ve layered a little Muscat into the blend, adding to the exciting aroma of this wine. We followed our usual style of fermenting in both stainless (70%) and barrel (30%), with no malolactic fermentation. The wine is in oak for 6 months to gain a note of vanilla. The increasing use of stainless and cold fermentation provides ever fresher and decidedly forward fruit that leaps from the glass.

2013 Bonterra Chardonnay

This product is a LCBO vintages essential. Essentials are kept in many LCBO stores over a longer period of time than the every two week releases, sometimes even year after year which means you should be able to get your hands on this wine pretty easily.

Pale in color with a mild varietal nose with some nice apple and pear coming through. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice vanilla/apple and pear. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice crisp acidity and a slight pepper/spicy note. It builds nicely in the mouth. Quite an impressive chard for the price, and not too over baked. I would give it an 88-89. My kinda Chard! Apparently it will go on the limited time offer for $2 off in November! I would imagine it will easily keep 1-2 years. Buy lots 🙂

Release Date:April 1, 2015
Alcohol/Vol 13.6% Made in:California, USA By: Fetzer Vineyards Sugar Content:6 g/L Sweetness Descriptor:D – Dry Style: Aromatic & Flavourful Varietal:Chardonnay
Description: Tropical notes of pineapple and banana plus buttercream, caramel and smoke. This is a smooth, creamy Chardonnay. Bonterra’s organic practices help express the vibrancy of the fruit. Pair with grilled shrimp, chicken tourtière or lobster with butter sauce.

From Bonterras web site:
Aromas of honey and lightly toasted almonds, followed by tropical aromas of pineapple, citrusy lemon and crème brulee. The wine is refreshing on the palate, with a minerality that is both bright and clean, drawing you into a vibrant tartness and lemon zest that is absolutely, positively Bonterra Chardonnay, vintage after vintage. Our organic fruit from Mendocino offers the characteristic flavors of green apples, pears, and citrus to our chardonnay. We ferment 70% of the juice in a combination of French and American oak, which is allowed to
undergo malolactic fermentation to create a rich, creamy wine with just a touch of new oak spice. The remaining 30% is fermented in stainless steel to preserve the crisp fresh fruit favors. We age most of the wine using previously-used or neutral oak in order for these fresh fruit characteristics to shine through. New oak was used for just 16% of the wine to give this chardonnay a nice vanilla note. An initial impression of rich, buttery cream quickly turns to aromas of honey and lightly toasted almonds, followed by tropical aromas of pineapple, citrusy lemon and crème brulee. The wine is refreshing on the palate, with a minerality that is both bright and clean, drawing you into a vibrant tartness
and lemon zest that is absolutely, positively Bonterra Chardonnay.

Kaiken Brut mini review

This wine is made in the traditional French method using pinot noir/chard grapes. Like French champagne the wine is non-vintage meaning they blend the grapes from different years to achieve the desired consistent flavor. Pale in color with a nice crisp nose with minerality coming through. On the mid palate the wine matches the nose, a nice crisp wine with some nice chard fruit coming through. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice dryness and the citrus notes and acidity lingers nicely in the mouth. A very traditional champagne style bubbly. I would give it an 88 or so. 2011 Cheval-Quancard Reserve Bordeaux Blanc

This wine shows a refreshing change … a French wine that CLEARLY displays the wine type on the label. In this case a Sauv blanc/Semillon blend. In the past French wines have relied on the consumer to be savvy enough to know what varietals are used when you see its from a region. This makes it more complicated for newbies and as a result less approachable. IMHO

This wine is 90% Sauv Blanc/10% Semillon. This wine is pale in color with a nice crisp nose of citrus and minerality. On the mid palate the wine matches the nose with nice citrus notes along with some nice crisp dryness. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice minerality and acidity. The wine lingers nicely in the mouth and would be very food friendly. I would give it an 88 or so, and given the price is a pretty good deal!

Dark in color with a mild nose of red berries and oak. On the mid palate the wine displays lovely rich bold dark cherries. On the med length finish the wine displays noticeable alcohol and firm acidity and tannins. I think the wine is a little young. It’s quite firm. I would give it an 88 or so. Age or decant and it will be lovely.

Niagara on the Lake visit and Chateau des Charmes Paul Bosc Sauv Blanc

We are fortunate in Toronto to live close to a number of wine regions. Here in Ontario they are broken down into 5 appellations (regions). If your planning a trip to any Ontario wineries the place to start your planning is WineCountry. Their web site has a great interactive planning feature, contact information about the wineries and so much more. Whether you are heading down for a couple of days of R&R or a quick trip down there’s lots to do. A number of the wineries have restaurants and some even have Inns (Cave Springs for example) associated with them. I’ve previously written up trips to the Escarpment, Prince Edward County, appelations and visited Coffin Ridge in the emerging area. I still need to plan a trip down to the Lake Erie region. This time around I thought I would talk about Niagara on the Lake.

Downtown Niagara on the Lake is a lovely quaint area with a nice shopping area, bars, restaurants and Inns. Niagara’s Finest can help you find great Inns and restaurants.

We stayed at The Gate House which is centrally located an reasonably priced.

If your into culture there is Shaw Festival.

There’s a nice bike path called the Niagara Recreational trail that runs along the river too. A map of the ride so can can get a feel for distance/difficulty etc.

And if you never been be sure and checkout the butterfly conservatory.

A complete list of wineries in the Niagara on the Lake appelation can be found at the WineCountry web site mentioned above. If you are use to the escarpment wines the Niagara on the lake reds are softer, less earthy and the whites tend to be more minerally.

As an example of one of the whites we tried on our trips we stopped by Chateau des Charmes which by the way is a beautiful winery.

The 2013 Paul Bosc Sauv Blanc is pale in color with a mild citrus nose. On the mid palate this wine displays some nice tart citrus notes to match the nose. The wine is medium in length with some nice mouth grip. The lively acidity lingers nicely along with some nice grassy notes, and pink grapefruit most noticeable as it warmed up. Be careful not too serve this one too cold or you will miss out. This is a New Zealand style Sauv blanc, I would give it an 88-89. Very well done. At $17.95 a bottle it’s a good deal. It will be a very food friendly wine!

from the winery’s web site:
This Sauvignon Blanc has been sourced exclusively from our Paul Bosc Estate Vineyard. The nose is extraordinary; fresh grass, gooseberry and lemon-lime all harmonized together to make this heady perfume. The mouth feel is hefty considering it’s an unoaked wine. It’s under screw cap because we want you to open and enjoy it now, young and bright.

Our main block of Sauvignon Blanc is on the St. David’s Bench Vineyard. We do have a very small block on the Paul Bosc Estate that was planted in 1983. Even though it’s a small block we still carefully manage the yield. By not asking the vine to produce a lot of grapes, we don’t exhaust its resources during the growing season. This allows it to store carbohydrates over the winter in preparation for the next growing season.

I’ll put up some more wine reviews from the trip in later posts.

I hope you will take some time and go down and visit the wineries!
