Wither Hills Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Pale in color with a mild citrus nose. On the mid palate the wine displays citrus and lemony notes to match the nose. Straight out of the fridge the wine was too cold and the finish was on the lighter side. As the wine warmed up it displays some lovely zest and crisp acidity. There’s some nice mouth grip with the minerality lingering and building in the mouth. A nice wine for sure but watch your serving temperature.

From the LCBO web site:

STYLE – Aromatic & Flavourful
For the price, this is remarkably concentrated, with ample weight and intense flavors. It’s more subdued on the nose, offering just hints of struck flint and grapefruit, but the citrusy flavors surge forward, culminating in a long, grapefruity finish. Special Designation: Best Buy. 2013 Whoa Nelly Pinot Noir

Garnet in color with a mild nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice soft red berries along with some varietal rustic notes. On the medium length finish it has some nice fine smooth tannins along with the rustic notes that linger for a bit. This is a softer well made pinot. Not overly complex but nice none the less. I paired it with a lamb shank at Reds and frankly the shank over powered the wine. Not a bad pinot but better with less robust foods. I would give it an 88-89. Not in the LCBO so I guess you will have to venture over to Reds to get a glass 🙂 Oh no not that …. This wine is from Oregon.

Oyster Bay Pinot Noir 2014

Garnet in color with a varietal rustic nose. On the mid palate the wine dislays varietal raspberry and some gently earthy and rustic notes. On the medium length finish the light red fruits linger nicely with smooth gentle tannins. This is definitely more of a fruit forward lighter pinot. I would give it an 88 or so. We paired it with BBQ salmon and it went well. Don’t pair it with anything too big or you won’t be tasting the wine at all.

Paco & Lola Albariño 2013

Pale in color with a nice nose of crisp minerality. On the mid palate the wine spot on matches the nose with crisp minerality, some nice zesty citrus notes and straight out of the bottle a hint of flint. The flint passed quickly. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice crisp acidity that lingers nicely in the mouth. This is a quite a nice wine. I would give it an 88 or so. Very food friendly. If your not familiar with Albariño they are very Sauv blanc like. Well the ones I like are anyway. We don’t get a lot of them in the LCBO so if you haven’t had one this is a good one to try. Occasionally they can be sweeter (which this one is not).

2010 Fielding Cab/Merlot

Dark in color with a mild nose. On the mid palate the wine displays expressive dark cherries along with some plummy notes. On the medium length finish the wine is nice and dry with some nice complexity lingering in the mouth along with noticeable oak. This is a lovely wine. The complexity and dryness are subtle and best appreciate with food. That said this is a very food friendly wine. We paired it with meat lasagna and it went well. I would give it an 89 or so. Not in the LCBO, we bought it at the winery for $35. Nugan Estate McLaren Parish Vineyard Shiraz 2013

Inky dark in color with a nice nose of black berries and noticeable oak. On the mid palate this is a smoother shiraz, almost more syrah like. Nice black berries but no where near blueberries and maybe even a hint of mocha. On the medium length finish the wine displays some subtle spice, tannins, and oak. The fruit is ripe and concentrated, and here it makes for a layered, quite plush mouthfeel that’s consistent right through the palate and through the very good finish.
