2011 First Press Chardonnay mini review

I tasted this one at the LCBO tasting bar. Mini reviews are done on a small sampling. Pale in color with a lovely nose of vanilla coming through. On the mid pallet the wine displays some nice vanilla to match the nose backed by some acidity, some and spicy notes. In the medium length finish the acidity lingers for a bit. All in all this was not a bad chard but not a fabulous one either. I would give it an 88 or so.

From the LCBO web site:

Tasting Note
Lovely depth of aromas – look for apricot, nectarine, banana cream pie and white peach, with hints of vanilla and woodsmoke. Bright, juicy and harmonious. A very nice fruit-driven Chardonnay displaying a deft use of oak. Pair with roasted turkey with a tangerine glaze. (VINTAGES panel, Nov. 2013)

2010 Greenlane Chardonnay

I had the absolute pleasure of attending a winemakers dinner at Paradiso Burlington where Dianne Smith the winemaker at Greenlane came out to tell us all about there wines. This wine was for me the highlight of the evening. The vines are 8 years old and the wine was fermented 60% in stainless steel and 40% in French oak. Pale in color with a mild nose. On the mid pallet the wine has soft vanilla notes along with some mild butterscotch. The wine is on the lighter side of medium in length on the finish. It is a milder, smooth, well made wine. I would give it an 88-89. They also have a reserve where all of the wine saw oak as well as Sur de lie. I’d love to try that one! This one shows some amazing promise. A very nice wine indeed. It was very food friendly and was paired with a Confit chicken thigh made with aged goat cheese, which was yummy by the way. $21.95 at the winery.

From the winery’s web site:
Tasting Notes
This 2010 Chardonnay combines the fresh fruit characteristics of our tank ferments with a mouth filling creaminess derived from our barrel fermented and aged portion. Notes of butterscotch and vanilla are enhanced by subtle traces of minerality.

Pairing Recommendations: Enjoy this wine with steamed mussels in a garlic white wine sauce.

2009 Henry of Pelham Estate Pinot Noir

I got given this one as a gift. Deeper garnet in color with nice rustic nose and some sugar coming through. On the mid pallet the wine displays classic pinot noir flavors with rustic notes, and strawberry coming through. On the medium length finish some of the strawberry lingers along with some tannins. This isn’t a terrible wine by any means but not fabulous by my tastes either. I would give it an 88 or so.

Pale in color with a mild nose with some vanilla coming through. On the mid pallet the wine displays vanilla to match the nose along with some subtle pear. This is a smooth, on the lighter side, California style chard. On the finish the wine is on the lighter side of medium in length with some vanilla lingering. This is a very food friendly wine or can easily be sipped on it’s own. I would give it an 88-89. Nice! And what’s to complain at this price!

2010 Wakefield Shiraz

Dark in color with a nice nose of black berries. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with dark berries and smooth refined tannins. The wine is medium in length on the finish. J. Lohr Seven Oaks 2011 Cab

I like a lot of the wines coming out of J. Lohr. Great value for money. This wine is dark in color with a mild nose of dark berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some black cherries to match the nose. On the finish the wine has some firm tannins, some alcohol, and even some acidity right out of the bottle. A little bit of breathing or ageing helped to ease this allow you to enjoy the fruit more. This is a lovely cab. I would give it an 89 or so. This wine is on a number of restaurant’s menus so if you can’t think of anything else to order this is not a bad choice.

2011 RODNEY STRONG ESTATE PINOT NOIR

Garnet in color with a nose of red berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays strawberries and some rustic notes. On the lighter side of medium in length on the finish there are some tannins to round out the wine. This is definitely more of a fruit forward wine. The style the LCBO label it as is Medium bodied and fruity. I’d say that is accurate. I would give it an 88 or so.

CASTELLO DI NEIVE BARBARESCO 2004

This wine is one of my favs. It’s a go to wine for me. Barbaresco’s in case your not aware is made from the same Nebbiolo grape as the mighty Barolo. I consider them a cheap man’s Barolo. They tend to big bold wines. This one is an essential in the LCBO so can be found regularly. I’ve had this particular one in my cellar since 2008 so I thought it was time to crack it and see what age has brought to the table. Pale almost garnet in color (as it always is), with a mild nose. The cork looks good. So I am getting anxious. On first taste out of the bottle … bam, there it is, that horrible realization you’ve waited too long. It’s basically vermouth like. Nasty. Crap, it wasn’t so bad as to be undrinkable but not long off. I cracked a second one I had in the cellar and it too was past due. I am inside the recommended keeping length, but that is at best a guess. There’s no science behind that estimate. Sad 🙁

From the LCBO web site from when I bought the wine (keeping records is key for maintaining a cellar!:
CASTELLO DI NEIVE BARBARESCO 2004 DOCG (Az. Agricola Di Italo Stupino) TASTING NOTE: The 2004 Barbaresco is textbook Nebbiolo. It is a small-scaled wine, but everything is in the right place. Made in a delicate, feminine style, it offers floral, spiced aromatics and pure, clean fruit, with excellent balance and well-integrated tannins. I can’t ask for anything more from a wine at this level. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2014. Score – 89. (Antonio Galloni, www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2007) 674044 (XD) 750 mL $21.80

2012 Orpailleur Classique (white)

Another of the wines from the Quebec region. I first encountered the Seyval (white) grape, another of the hearty breeds made for extreme climates, in Prince Edward county at Waupous. Waupous by the way is one of my favorite wineries in Prince Edward County. Not so much for the wines which are simple well made and inexpensive, more for the lovely ambience of the place!
Splash-header
I do digress … This wine is a blend of Seyval and Vidal. Pale in color with a nose of minerality and some floral notes (likely from the vidal). On the mid pallet the wine displays minerality to match the nose, and some citrus notes. On the lighter side of medium in length on the finish the wine displays minerality along with some slightly tart green apple notes. The sweetness of the vidal has offset this tartness. I’d give it an 88 or so for $16.

From the winery’s web site:

Dark and extracted, this has firm, dry tannins. It’s hard edged, but the potential of the black currant fruit is apparent. Give this structured wine at least five years for the rich fruit to surface. Score – 89. (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, March 2013)

Orpailleur Rouge 2010

We went snowboarding at Mont Sutton and saw a bunch of winery signs so decided to dip in and check out wine from the region. Quebec does not export much (if any) of it’s wine to Ontario so I had no idea what they were doing in the region. This particular wine is largely made of Frontenac grapes. A hearty grape from the University of Minnesota’s arsenal. I first encountered these at Hoity Toity cellars. Dark in color with a mild nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays some red berries, nothing particularly jumping out at me. The finish is on the lighter side of medium in length with not a lot going on. Tannins and dryness are negligible. This is by no means a horrible wine, but by no means a good one either. At $15.60 a bottle I would not be jumping to buy more. I would give it an 87 or so. Don’t pair this with anything too hearty or you won’t be tasting the wine at all.

From the winery’s web site:
Orpailleur Rouge
Grapes varieties : Blend of frontenac, marechal foch and black seyval
SAQ code: 00743559
Description :

Intense red shade colour. The nose is powerful and emanate main aromas of cherry. Peovy and currant scents.

SEVEN FALLS CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2010

I enjoy Washington State wines. Dark in color with a nice nose of black berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays dark cherries to match the nose, backed immediately by some harsh notes. I’m not even sure what I would say, mint maybe, or menthol. I was about to give up on the wine since I had a dinner guest showing up but I decided to break out my handy dandy decanter. 20 minutes in the decanter and the hard notes were absolutely gone. Leaving the rich fruit along with some nice tannins on a medium finish. In the end this is a lovely wine as long as you breath it. I would give it a solid 90 (once decanted). Some aging would also do the trick.

2009 Ironstone Merlot

Cherry, cocoa powder and a touch of bramble on the nose. Brimming with cherry and fig notes accented by gorgeous chocolate touches. A nice brightness to the acidity and a grippy finish. Enjoy this with ribs or burgers hot off the grill. (VINTAGES panel, July 2013)

2009 Stimson Merlot

Stopped by Spice Route last night for dinner and had this wine. Dark in color with a mild nose of plum. On the mid pallet the wine displays plum to match the nose along with some red cherries. There’s some tannins on the medium length finish. It’s a little bit sweet. I would give it an 88-89. Not a bad wine at all. Not in the LCBO and there’s no mention of price on the web site but at $9 a glass at a restaurant it couldn’t be all that expensive.

From the Winery’s web site:
The warm, sunny days and cool nights during the growing season create ideal conditions for producing grapes with intense aromas and flavors. Washington state is famed for its flavorful, award winning Merlots. The Stimson Estate Cellars Merlot exhibits classic raspberry and cherry characters with a
touch of vanilla and toast on the smooth finish. This lush, pleasurable Merlot pairs perfectly with grilled
salmon or a flavorful pasta.

SISTER’S RUN BETHLEHEM BLOCK CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2011

Dark in color with a nose of black berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely rich black cherries, and even a little blueberries. The wine is one the lighter side of medium in length on the finish with some tannins coming through and even a hint of pepper. This is definitely more of a fruit forward cab made in more of a traditional Aussie style. I would give it an 89. Yumm.

2011 Chateau Ste Michelle

I reviewed a number of Chateau Ste Michelle wines and enjoyed them. They are from Washington State. Dark in color lovely rich nose with plum coming through. On mid pallet plums are there but quickly backed by some firm tannins acidity and even some mild bitterness straight out of the bottle. This wine is just too young or needs some breathing. After even as little as 20 minutes in the glass the finish was easing nicely leaving a nice fruit forward Merlot. A year in the cellar would help immensely. Sadly not at the LCBO right now. I am sure it will come back. I had it at Joey’s. Winery’s web site. I would give it an 89 or so. $15 at the winery.

From the winery’s web site:
We craft this wine to be our complex yet approachable Merlot. The wine offers aromas of black cherry, leather and spice with layers of rich dark red fruit flavors and a long, smooth, sweet finish. A touch of Syrah adds a jammy fruit character. I think of this wine as a great “everyday red”.

FINCA EL ENCINAL CRIANZA 2010

When a wine gets a rating like this at this price it flies off the shelves. This one is no exception. I’m skeptical at prices like this. On with the lasting. Dark in color with a nice nose of black berries and some oak. On the mid pallet the wine displays the same black berries to match the nose. On the finish the wine displays some nice smooth tannins and some complexity. This is a very nice Tempranillo. Well made and food friendly. I paired it with a steak and it went well. I would give it an 89 or so. A far cry from the 94 they gave it but good none the less. Especially given the price. Yumm!

From the LCBO web site:
FINCA EL ENCINAL CRIANZA 2010 VINTAGES 355081 | 750 mL bottle Price $ 17.95
Made in: Ribera Del Duero, Spain By: Bodegas Franco-Españolas
Release Date: Jan 18, 2014
14.0% Alcohol/Vol. Style: Full-bodied & Smooth Sugar Content: 7 g/L Sweetness Descriptor: XD – Extra Dry

Tasting Note
Pay no attention to the toasted oak scents that introduce this wine, because they soon leave the scene. Fix your attention instead to the generosity of its fruit, voluptuous and smooth. This is richly layered in flavors (some closer to meat than fruit), with a density that traps and wraps in a lovely way. All in all, a complex wine and an astonishing value. Finca El Encinal is a project from the traditional bodega Franco Españolas de la Rioja. Special Designation: Best Buy. Score – 94. (wineandspiritsmagazine.com, June 2013)

2006 Kacaba Meritage

I love a number of the Kacaba wines. I put this one away back in 2011. I guessed this one would easily keep until 2013. Dark in color with a lovely mild nose of black berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some subtle black berries to match the nose. You can taste some cab franc coming through. There’s also some lovely earthy notes still present. The fruit is dieing down some but the finish sure isn’t. It’s got a whack or firm ripe tannins along with some lovely dryness, and some nice mouth grip dominated by red berries. There’s still a lot going on in this wine 7 years after harvest. Yum. I would give it an 88-89. Originally $16.95 at the winery!

From the winery’s web site back in 20011:
2006 Meritage – (LCBO# 101477) $16.95 per bottle / $203.40 per case A blend of 50% cabernet franc and 50% cabernet sauvignon. Purplish in colour with aromas of earth, chassis, cedar and leather. OAK BAY PINOT NOIR 2010

Garnet in color with a rustic nose along with some raspberry and strawberry. On the mid oallet the wine displays raspberry, strawberry and rustic notes to match the nose. The wine is on the lighter side of medium in length with little to no tannins. There isn’t a lot going on in the finish of this wine. It’s a little disappointing. Most Okanagan wines are pretty big, not this one. I would give it an 87-88. It is quite food friendly. We paired it with roast chicken and it went ok. The LCBO describe it as Medium bodied and Fruity. I would agree with fruity for sure. Extra dry? Really?

From the LCBO web site:

Tasting Note
Beginning to show maturity in its colour and aromas. Rich tones of earth, dried cranberry and dry forest join quite ample cherry notes on the nose. Just about into its prime drinking time. The tannins are soft, and offer a lovely framework for the replays. A touch of spice adds nice complexity. (VINTAGES panel, April 2013)

H3 Columbia Crest 2011Cab Sauv

I last wrote about the 2010 vintage of this wine and enjoyed it. This one is dark in color with a nose of black berries and some oak. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with deep black cherries coming through prominently. There’s some youthful acidity on the medium length finish along with some tannins and a hint of alcohol. The wine is slightly sweet. This is definitely more of a fruit forward wine with a nice bite on the finish. I would give it an 89 or so. I paired it with smoked salmon and it went very well. Remember red fish red wine! Yumm. I agree with the style commend from the LCBO Full bodied and smooooooooth 🙂

Tasting Note
An up-and-coming Vintages customer favourite? The H3 Cabernet Sauvignon certainly generates much excitement with every appearance and it’s easy to see why. Charcoal, smoked meat and campfire smoke notes play wonderfully with the blackberry, bacon, cassis, coffee and bacon aromas and flavours. A big wine perfect for slow-cooked dry ribs, or coffee-and porter-braised brisket. (VINTAGES panel, Nov. 2013)

ARES CRIANZA 2009

Recently the LCBO release focused on Spanish reds. The most common of all the Spanish reds is of course Tempranillo. Another name is a Crianza. This one is dark in color with a mild nose of dark berries. On the mid pallet, without food the wine displays some lovely smooth rich dark berries. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely mocha notes, some nice dryness and some smooth tannins. It’s got some nice mouth grip lingering nicely! On it’s own this is a nice sipping wine. I paired it with smoked trout and it softened the wine nicely leaving a very food friendly wine. I would give it a solid 89. Yumm.

From the LCBO web site:
ARES CRIANZA 2009 VINTAGES 305912 | 750 mL bottle Price $ 17.95
Made in: Rioja, Spain By: Lcbo – Vintages Purchasing
Release Date: Jan 18, 2014
13.0% Alcohol/Vol. Style: Medium-bodied & Fruity Varietal: Tempranillo
Sugar Content: 5 g/L Sweetness Descriptor: XD – Extra Dry

Tasting Note
The 2009 Ares Crianza is a pure Tempranillo from vines grown on clay-limestone soils. Fermented in stainless steel, the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak. It has a stony palate with fine definition: notes of blackberry, sloe and licorice unfurling in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, chalky tannins. The wine is somewhat masculine for a Crianza, but because of that, it is imbued with individualism. It has fine edginess and constitutes a cerebral Crianza, rather than one that hands out pleasure on a plate. Drink now-2017. Score – 90. (Neal Martin, erobertparker.com, Aug. 2012)

2013 Mount Riley Sauv Blanc

Pale in color with a nice nose of grapefruit. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with some nice mild grapefruit coming through. This is more of a smooth Sauv blanc. Nice refinement. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice mouth grip with grapefruit lingering nicely. This will be a very food friendly wine. I would give it an 88-89. Yumm.

CHÂTEAU GRAND VILLAGE 2010

Dark in color with a nice nose of dark berries. On the mid pallet this is definitely a cab franc dominated wine. I like cab franc but expect a lot more from a Bordeaux. The wine is medium in length on the finish. This isn’t a bad wine but not a very complex one either. I would give it an 88 or so.

From the LCBO web site for a different year:

Tasting Note
The Grand Village is wine from their family estate and their 2009, a blend of 75% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, is a sleeper of the vintage. The good news is that there are 5,000 cases of this wine, which shows loads of raspberries and cherries, silky tannins, wonderful elegance and a medium-bodied mouthfeel. The family has been farming this same terroir for over 500 years! Score – 88. (Robert Parker Jr., erobertparker.com, Feb. 2012)

2010 Ghost Pines Chardonnay

Pale in color with a lovely nose of vanilla. This wine is senstive to temperature. Serve it too cold and you will miss out on the complexities of this wine. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely chard fruit, some apples, and the like. On the finish the wine has some lovely mouth grip with vanilla sticking around and even some butterscotch. Very nice. I would give it an 89 or so.

BERONIA RESERVA 2008

Dark in color with a nice nose of dark berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays dark berries to match the nose along with some mocha. On the medium length finish the wine displays some smooth tannins and some nice dryness. It lingers and builds nicely in the mouth. A very nice wine given the price. I would give it an 88-89.

Tasting Note
Rioja (REE-hoe-Ha!) is [in] a state of flux these days. You have a raft of producers sticking to their old ways, another raft (can you have 2 rafts?) modernizing and making wine in the international style, and outside the border, there’s a slew of new Spanish regions like Toro or Jumilla, which have consumers excited. But Beronia seems to skirt all these issues and make great wine at a good value year after year. They’re neither classic nor new, producing a wine that definitely has seen some oak but remains fresh and vibrant in the mouth. If you’re new to rioja, this is a great place to start – with the proviso that as you progress you’ll often run into more expensive bottles that aren’t quite as good. The 2005 vintage of this wine was sublime, but the current offering – 2008 – is also a winner. (Neal McLennan, westernlivingmagazine.com, March 26, 2013)
