Castelgreve Riserva Chianti Classico 2013

I last enjoyed the 2016 Chianti Classico from this winery and loved it, so when I saw this one, I figured the Riserva is only going to be better … Oops. Dark in color with a mild red berry nose with some oak coming through on the mid palate the wine matches the nose with some mild red fruits and a lot of woody/earthy/oaky notes. The fruit on this wine is quite subdued and overwhelmed by the oaking. On the medium length finish there’s some dried fruit notes, some mild tannins and acidity. While not a bad wine, it’s not a great one to my tastes and honestly, the non Riserva was a lot better. I would give it an 87-88. I bought 4 and haven’t decided if I’m going to take them back or not …

Very charming and attractive nose with herbal hints and menthol tones. Intense and complex on the palate, with generous layers of red forest fruits, spice and leather. A very seductive style, with plenty of charm and complexity. Score – 95. (Andrea Briccarello,, March 30, 2018)
