Mathieu Paquet Pinot Noir 2016

When I first read the back of the wine I saw an AOP designation and thought, ok WTF is that? Well it seems I’m a little behind in my French wine legislation reading 🙂 Turns out Appellation d’Origine Protégée or AoP is the new top of the quality designations. A great article from the International Wine Guid explained the new laws.

This wine is garnet in color with a nice soft red berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some soft red berries, think raspberries and the like along with some unusual flavors. This LCBO describe what they call new leather, and that may be it. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice dryness, acidity and tannins. I can’t say I loved this wine, and frankly if I had more I’d return them. I would give it an 87-88, not really to my tastes.
