1998 Alkoomi Cabernet sauvignon

We stopped by Seaons in Oakville for a little birthday celebration and the proprietor treated us to this bottle that he has had in their extensive wine cellar for a LONG time. The wine is dark in color mild on the nose. On the mid pallet are some mild classic cab flavors with black fruits. On the finish the wine has some tannins but they are well under control, and there is no pepper to be found on the wine as some Aussie cabs can have. Alcohol has become VERY well integrated and there is a slight tartness to the finish but not aweful by any means. This also eased as it breathed. There are some oaks but they too have become integrated. This wine is by no means fruit forward and in fact likely through the aging the fruit has become quite subdued. While I would not say that it is past it’s prime, I can’t imagine this getting any better. I paired it with a lovely rack of venison and it went very well …

Tasting Note
Ruby-red. Vibrant red- and blackcurrant aromas are complicated by musky tobacco, cedar and underbrush; very cabernet. Bitter cherry and licorice add firmness to the sweet berry flavors, with dusty tannins contributing grip. The tannins gain strength on the finish but the wine maintains freshness and a sweetly seductive personality. Score – 90. (Josh Raynolds, International Wine Cellar, July/Aug. 2008)
