Rodney Strong 2006 Cab Sauv

This wine is quite dark in color. On the nose are some classic California Cab bouquets, cherries and the like. On first opening the wine is dominated by alcohol. After 1 hour of decanting this had mostly passed. The wine is a little on the young side. On the finish the wine has some tannins but they are in control. Once the alcohol dominance had passed the mid pallet revealed some lovely cassis and cherry flavors. With some patience either in the decanter or in the cellar this wine will reward as it often does. I would give it a 90.

Tasting Note
Perfect for fall feasts and autumn’s comfort foods, this Cab is deep ruby in colour with aromas suggesting blueberry preserves, plum, black cherry, graphite and a hint of underbrush. It’s dry with a creamy texture and plump black fruit flavours as well as notes of vanilla, espresso and baking spices on the long finish. Quite well-balanced and structured with vibrant medium acidity and ripe, moderate tannins. Serve over the next 3 years with pot roast, lamb chops, beef stew or meat loaf. (VINTAGES panel, Aug. 2009)
