2015 Huff South Bay Vineyards Merlot

I haven’t been out to the county wineries since 2009 so as part of a road trip we stopped in for a couple of days. We stayed at the Waring house centrally located. It was shocking how the Warning house has grown. This wine was on their by the bottle offerings so I choose it to go with the striploin I had chosen for dinner. Inky dark in color with a super inviting dark berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays lovely vibrant dark berries to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays lovely smooth tannins and acidity. The wine has some fabulous mouth grip and roundness to the wine. This wine, is hands down, the best County red I’ve ever had. It was super yummy. I would give it an 89 or so. I went back to the winery and grabbed 3 of them it was THAT good. Wow. This bodes really well for the county. At this time there is only one appellation from VQA for the whole county. This particular vineyard is on the other side of the county from Huff estates. Not in the LCBO, but if you get a chance to grab one, you will be handsomely rewarded $35 at the winery. I seem to recall it was about $53 at Waring house … Not a bad markup at all.

TASTING NOTES
Cherry-garnet in colour, our ’15 merlot infuses the nostrils with a compliment of savoury-herbal-spice complexity, floral hints of violet supported by a beckoning mist of black fruit (currant, cassis). Behold a generous mouth-feel of woodland fruit nestled over earthy notes with a tannic weave that will unfurl with bottle age. Talk about luxury without excess: a Merlot concerto.

FOOD PAIRINGS
Meats – duck, pork, veal, venison, rabbit and braised beef

Cheese – brie, camembert, sharp cheddar, gorgonzola and blue veins.
