Alejandro Fernández Dehesa La Granja 2008 Tempranillo

Inky dark in color with a nice nose of dark berries and oak. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice dark berries, oaky notes and some nice chocolate and coffee. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice firm tannins and acidity. I would give it an 88-89. Very nice.

This is pedigree wine at a relatively affordable price. Alejandro Fernandez, producer of one of Spain’s most noteworthy labels, Tinto Pesquera, turns out this excellent, aged red from a property in Zamora near northern Portugal. A subtle whiff of funky barnyard air greets the nose, leading to a smooth, supple palate redolent of plum, spicy oak and black pepper. Big but, remarkably, unheavy. Pair it with roast lamb, pork or poultry, the more herbs the better. Score – 91. (Beppi Crosariol, The Globe and Mail, Nov. 17, 2015) $19.95
