CHÂTEAU CROIX-MOUTON 2009

Any time I see a Bordeaux rated well, for under $20 I jump at it. In this case the wine was late to the release date making it a whole lot easier than usual to be able to find it! Dark in color with a mild nose of dark berries and oak. On the mid pallet the dominant cab franc is really clear. Lots of lovely dark berries to match the nose along with some oak and some chocolate. Like most good Bordeauxs this one is all about the finish where the wine displays a medium length finish some nice dryness, some tannins and some peppery/spicy notes. I would give this one an 89-90. It ought to have some longevity too! Yumm!

Tasting Note
A big-time sleeper in this vintage, this dense purple wine from Jean-Philippe Janoueix over-delivers for its humble pedigree. A blend of 86% Merlot and the rest mostly Cabernet Franc, it is a surprisingly big wine (over 14% alcohol) with notes of smoky barbecue, kirsch, blackberries, coffee and cassis. Luscious tannins, low acidity and a textured, multi-dimensional mouthfeel make for an impressive Bordeaux Superieur. Drink it over the next 3-5 years. Score – 90.
